In this tutorial, I am showing you an easy way to create a lovely black and white image. The trick is to add one color to make the creation pop. In this example, I painted her hair red. Little details like that can transform a blend image into an attractive and catchy one.
This tutorial is assuming that you have a basic knowledge of Photoshop and that you can draw.
So let’s get started…
• First create a sketch… any sketch. Here, I designed this lovely lady. I drew her in crayons and markers, then scanned her and uploaded the image to Photoshop. You don’t have to do that… you can also draw directly in Photoshop using a tablet. I just wanted to try something different for a change.
• When you have your sketch uploaded or drawn, create a new layer under the sketch and paint your character. You always add color in a new layer under your sketch.
• Below, you can see how I organized my layers. The top layer is called “Sketch” (I turned it off for you to see it better), then underneath I put the layer called “Colors”, and finally at the very bottom, I put the layer called “White Background.”
• Now turn off the “Sketch” and the “Colors” layers!!!
• Create two new layers on the top of your “White Background.” Call them “Black” and “Moon”
• Click on the “black” layer to make it active.
• Now, using the bucket and making sure that the foreground color is set to black, fill the canvas with the black color.
• Click on the “Moon” layer to make it active.
Use the “elliptical marquee tool.”
Drag on your canvas until you have a good size moon.Go to “Edit” and select “Fill” as shown here.
A window appears. Select the background color, because our background color is white as shown. The black square that you see is the foreground color and the white square underneath is the background color.
Click okay and you have a moon.
• Create 2 new layers on the top of the “Moon” Layer. Name them “Center” and “Corners.”
• Your “Sketch” and “Colors” layers are still turned off as shown below.
• Click on the “Center” layer to make it active and create a cool design.
• Click on the “Corners” layer to make it active. Copy the design you made in the center and paste it in each corner.
I will not insult you and tell you how to draw… Everyone has his, or her, own style. Just go wild… be creative. Don’t forget to change the colors.
When you are done, you just need to turn back on your “Sketch” layer and “Colors” layer.
And voilà!
You are done!!!!
You can add, if you want, some design around the picture. It will make it look even prettier!
I added this “checkerboard” style frame.
